Baby’s eye exam – is it really necessary?

It is surprisingly often that we hear at our Institute from parents, opticians, pediatricians and even ophthalmologists that strabismus in a small child “is something normal”, that children under the age of two don’t need to undergo eye examination, or that a child will simply grow out of it. However, these statements are wrong and may even be harmful. Only during the first three months of a child’s life, irregularities concerning differences in the eye positioning may have physiological causes. However, after that time strabismus is always a disorder and needs to be examined thoroughly.
